Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities)
Student Engagement Stratagies
Projects & Presentations
In this strategy students will work individually or in groups to create a finished work that will convey important information to their classmates and improve their knowledge of the specific subject.
Read Aloud
In the activity students will be analyzing text as a group. They will be reading aloud as a whole class or in small groups to help build their understanding of a topic through peer based activities.
Question the Author
Here students are encouraged to express their own points of view and tap into their personal knowledge. They will be breaking down a text and comparing it to what they know about the subject while trying to expose any misinformation or biases the author might hold.
Timeline
With this activity students will layout the events surrounding or leading up the target topic. They will need to point out the major events that occurred that influenced how the target event transpired.
Simulation and Interactives
With this use of either online tools or physical media students will work together or individually to gather information on a topic and solve the challenge at hand. These simulations will take the form of games which the students should find both fun and educational.
Analyzing documents, artifacts, cartoons, recordings, photographs and posters
In this activity students will be given different items to analysis to try and extract the deeper meaning out of. Students will need to look beyond the surface level information to find the authors deeper meaning.
Project-Based Learning
When preforming this activity students will do their primary learning of a subject through the project. They will have very little to know formal instruction on the subject prior to the project and will be expected to demonstrate their knew knowledge through a presentation or paper.
Socratic Seminar
In this activity students will intelligently and respectfully engage in conversations related to the topic. They will defend a point, raise new questions, debate the merits of the point or many other types of conversations can take place within these forums.
